NEW DELHI (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 20th August, 2018) The new Pakistani government headed by recently appointed Prime Minister Imran Khan took the oath of office on Monday in the presence of Pakistani President Mamnoon Hussain, local media reported.

According to the GEO tv channel, the new cabinet, appointed by Khan on Sunday, comprises 20 people, including 15 ministers and five counselors for the prime minister.

The spokesman for the ruling Tehreek-e-Insafh (PTI) party, Fawad Hussain, said on Twitter that the cabinet would hold a meeting after the ceremony where the ministers would discuss the implementation of the new domestic policy outlined by Khan on Sunday.

Khan, 65, was elected the country's new prime minister on Friday after being backed by 176 lawmakers out of a total of 272. According to Khan, Pakistan's main problems include a debt crisis, lack of human development, inequality, problems in the education system and water shortages, among others.

In July, Pakistan held parliamentary and regional elections. The PTI led with Khan gaining 116 out of 272 directly elected seats in the lower house of parliament, failing to win a simple majority, which would have been enough to independently form a government. The party had to negotiate with other parties to form a ruling coalition.
