Panel Discusses Juvenile Barrack Construction In Central Jail

PESHAWAR, (UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News -7th Sept,2016) : Director, Investigation Wafaqi Mohtasib and Secretary, National Committee on Prison Reforms, Zaryab Musarrat and president provincial committee on prison reforms.
Sajid Mumtaz Khan Jadoon Wednesday visited Central Prison Peshawar to collect information regarding difficulties faced by juvenile prisoners. On their arrival in the prison, Superintendent, Central Jail, Peshawar, Masud-ur-Rehman gave a detailed briefing to them about the prisoners and facilities available to them.
They visited the juvenile barrack and discussed the construction of the proposed new barrack for juvenile prisoners. The new 24:90 feet barrack will also have library and study room will cost Rs.2.4 million, which will be financed by private volunteers.
There are about 200 juvenile prisoners in a barrack having the capacity of 60 inmates. The committee of Wafaqi Mohtasib was constituted in the pursuance of the directives of the Supreme Court of Pakistan in suo-moto case.
Asma Jehangir advocate is chairperson while Mian Hanif is co-chairperson of the committee. Talking on the occasion, Zaryab Musarrat, Secretary of the National Committee on Prison Reforms said that the purpose of their visit to the prison was to know about the difficulties of nearly 200 juvenile prisoners in the Central Jail Peshawar and construction of space for bathrooms and schooling to rehabilitate them in society after their release.
She said that there are 45 juveniles with 130 women prisoners, saying that they had planned the shifting of the overage children to Sweet Home. She said that the University of Peshawar, Islamia College University and Allama Iqbal Open University have offered the provision of free education to juvenile prisoners.
On this occasion, Sajid Mumtaz Khan, the provincial president of the committee told that a sub-committee of the prison reforms committee has been formed at the provincial level to look and oversee such matters on daily basis.
He said that every central jail of the province will be linked with an university, saying that Central Jail, Haripur has been linked with Comsat University and Central Jail, Peshawar with University of Peshawar, Islamia College University and Allama Iqbal Open University. These universities, has decided starting classes have waived off examination fees for prisoners.
