Punjab Assembly sitting adjourned over quorum issue

LAHORE (UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 19th May, 2017 ) : Parliamentary Secretary Higher Education Mehwish Sultana on Friday told the Punjab Assembly that the Punjab government was spending hefty amounts on promotion of education at grass-roots level.

"Our main emphasis is to attain 100 percent literacy by year 2020, for this various programs are in progress across the province," she added. She was answering questions by lawmakers during Question-Hour.

The Parliamentary Secretary said education for all was pivot of the PML-N government's priorities. Earlier, the first sitting of the 29th session of the current assembly was started two hours and six minutes behind its scheduled time with Speaker Rana Muhammad Iqbal in the chair.

On a question by lawmaker Nighat Sheikh, the Parliamentary Secretary said, Chief Minister Shehbaz Sharif through a directive had sanctioned setting up of a degree college for women for PP-144 (Dars Barey Mian).

Railways owned lnad, she said, had already been acquired after NOC and construction work would be started within current year.

Mehwish Sultana told a questioner Shoukat Hayyat Bosan that no college either for boys or for girls was in PP-200 (Multan), however, an approval for girls college had been made.

Opposition parties protested on the floor of the House against treasury's attempt to amend a resolution moved by opposition leader Mehmoodur Rashid on Indian spy case in International Court of Justice.

Law Minister Rana Sanaullah Khan moved the proposed amendment praising the Federal government for successfully handling the Indian spy's case. A PML-N lawmaker Azma Bokhari staged a walk out over Speaker's refusal to allow her on a Point of Order.

The House did not take the ordinances appearing on the agenda. A PTI lawmaker Mian Aslam Iqbal pointed out quorum which led to suspension of the proceedings for 34 minutes. However, the quorum was found incomplete on recount and the sitting was adjourned till Monday afternoon.
