What will People Say a film by Iram Haq was screened here late Thursday at the Residence of the Ambassador of Norway as part of the ongoing 16-day international film festival on human rights.
The Royal Norwegian Embassy hosted the screening of Iram Haq's latest film, "What Will People Say", a gripping drama about sixteen year old Nisha who lives a double life. At home with her family she is the perfect Pakistani daughter, but when out with her friends, she is a normal Norwegian teenager.
When her family gets information about her life style, Nisha's two worlds brutally collide. To set an example, Nisha's parents decide to kidnap her and place her with relatives where, Nisha is forced to adapt to their culture. The film has been selected as the Norwegian entry for the Best Foreign Language Film at the 91st academy Awards (the "Oscars").
The film has sparked much debate.
When the film begins, Nisha is a fully assimilated Norwegian teenager living a normal life in Oslo. She spends time with friends playing basketball, partying.
She easily executes the balancing act of being a dutiful Pakistani daughter and teenager just looking to have a good time with her friends. While her parents continue to be fully committed to their traditional Pakistani culture, Nisha goes through the motions.
The film was part of International Film Festival "Highlighting human rights through cinematography" arranged by United Nations Information Center in Islamabad (UNIC) in celebration of 70 years of Universal Declaration of Human Rights in collaboration with European Union.
