WASHINGTON (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 22nd January, 2020) Mexico should be commended for its efforts to return illegal immigrants intending to reach the United States back to Central America, including to Honduras and Guatemala, Acting Secretary of Homeland Security Chad Wolf said in a statement on Wednesday.
"I commend the government of Mexico for upholding their commitment to increased security and law enforcement at their southern border," Wolf said. "The efforts by the Mexican National Guard and other officials have thus far been effective at maintaining the integrity of their border, despite outbreaks of violence and lawlessness by people who are attempting to illegally enter Mexico on their way to the United States.
"
The caravan of several thousand migrants started its way to the United States from Honduras, but once they reached Mexico, the country's authorities began sending them back.
Wolf said the United States is monitoring the situation closely and the Department of Homeland Security has deployed special personnel on the ground assisting local authorities in stopping illegal immigrants and sending them back.
"Should any members of the caravan reach the US-Mexico border, they will be processed accordingly and quickly removed, returned or repatriated," Wolf said.
On Tuesday, Honduran officials said they were expecting more than 600 caravan members from Mexico by airplane and bus.
