Turkey has won its appeal with the World Trade Organization (WTO) against doubling of US tariffs on Turkish aluminum and steel imports, local media reported Wednesday.
"On December 18, Turkey won a dispute with the United States, which was examined in the framework of the WTO Dispute Settlement Mechanism," Turkish Trade Minister Ruhsar Pekcan said, as quoted by the Anadolu news agency.
In August, US President Donald Trump authorized the doubling of previously imposed import tariffs on Turkish aluminum and steel to 20 percent and 50 percent, respectively. The US move resulted in the Turkish lira hitting a historic low. Turkey responded by increasing tariffs on 22 types of US goods worth $533 million. In particular, the country introduced higher levies on US cars, alcohol, fruit, cosmetics and tobacco.
