Says she is happy to play the role of an ‘enemy’ if it brings the two states closer
Islamabad (UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News – 3rd June, 2018) Bollywood actress Swara Bhaskar, featuring in Veere di Wedding, recently spoke against Pakistan, calling it a failing state.
This called for a backlash from not only Pakistani side but Indian side as well as the actress is being condemned for her recent statements.
In her recent reply to a tweet from Indian journalist, she saidm, "There should we a distinction between States/ govts of a country & the people of that country. My regard for & goodwill towards the people of Pakistan remains unchanged. Some of my closest friends are Pakistani. Lahore remains one of my soul cities."
The Indian journalist had wrote, "Pak will ban Raazi & Veere & a dozen others. That coexists with many, many people in both countries appreciating artists in the other. Censors, Govt & Clergy don't define a people & Swara would probably agree with that - she fights those battles here herself."
In her Instagram post, she pointed towards how Indian people are criticizing her for her anti-Pakistan statements and dedicated the post to all the Pakistani people, saying, “Looks like Indo-Pak peace is on the horizon.”
Trying to pacify the condemnations from both sides, Bhaskar is now trying to change her stance, saying she is happy to play the role of an ‘enemy’ if it brings the two states closer.
Speaking about the ban on Veere de Wedding in Pakistan in a recent interview, the actor said, “For some reason I have to keep answering for that. I don’t know why people think I’m a spokesperson for the Pakistani government. What do you expect from a state that’s run by Sharia Laws?”
“They’re a nonsecular state.
I’m not surprised at all. Why should we hold up Pakistan, which is a failing state — I don’t understand why we keep taking pleasure and feeling a sense of self-worth from all the silly things that happen in Pakistan. Apologies to all my Pakistani friends right now. Rest assured, Pakistanis have way worse vocabulary than we do. I know,” Bhaskar added.
In another video from local tv show Mazak Raat being surfaced on social media, the Bollywood actress had contradictory thoughts about the neighboring country.
The actress then faced severe backlash for calling Pakistan a ‘failing state’ and a country run by ‘Sharia Laws’.
Pakistan actress Urwa Hocane also took to Twitter and slammed Bhaskar for her remarks.
“Pakistan is the country that you, Swara Bhaskar, referred to, in 2015, as the ‘Best country you have ever visited’ and it has only gotten better in the last few years in every aspect along with when it comes to having bigger hearts and welcoming our guest,” Hocane wrote on Twitter.
In her second tweet, Hocane said, “While you’re on this spree of empowering women, I must say you’ve become a bitter person. And all of this is odd coming from a citizen of a state that bans their own films i.e. Padmaavat, so let’s not talk about women empowerment.”
“This only reflects on you as an ignorant person, who is also quiet contradictory in her own statements. It’s not a failing state for sure, but you come across as a ‘Failing Human Being!’ From the citizen of the Phenomenal Pakistan,” she concluded.
