HYDERABAD, (UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 19th Oct, 2018 ) :The President of Sindh Abadgar Ittehad, a farmers' lobby group, Nawab Zubair Talpur has welcomed the announcement of the Federal Government about starting the sugarcane crushing season from November 15.
In a statement issued here Friday, Talpur expressed the hope that the Sugar Mills would be directed to comply with the center's directives. He requested Prime Minister Imran Khan to intervene in the matter of unpaid arrears which the Sugar Mills owed to the farmers.
According to him, the arrears had accrued to billions of rupees over the years due to a lack of interest of the provincial government of Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP).
Talpur said the delay in starting the sugarcane crushing also delayed the sowing of the wheat crop which later resulted in low wheat harvests and financial losses to the farmers. "The federal government should ensure implementation of its decision of beginning the crushing from November 15," he urged.
Talpur said, the cost of inputs for the sugarcane crop had steadily increased over last 6 years but the farmers were being paid the same low price for their crop. He also appealed the Federal Government to fix the price of sugarcane crop at Rs.200 per 40 kilogram.
