PESHAWAR, (UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 24th Apr, 2019 ) :A ground-breaking ceremony for the Prosecution Academy was held in Peshawar today to mark the beginning of the construction of the new training facility, which will also include equipment and capacity building support from United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).
The Prosecution Academy will serve the training needs of the prosecution department for existing and newly recruited staff of the institution through a standard and structured mechanism. Over a period of one year, six to eight training courses will help develop skills of approximately 150 to 200 officers of police and prosecution in the areas of investigation techniques and coordination, forensics, trial techniques and case management, amongst other focus areas.
The Academy will have a training facility, administration block and a residential compound, and the construction of the training academy is expected to be completed by mid-2020. The Government of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa has allocated 50 Kanal land for the academy at Mira Kachori District, Peshawar.
The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Prosecution Services (KPPS) were established in 2005 under the Prosecution Services Act, 2005. It is attached to the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Home and Tribal Affairs Department but functions independently under the leadership of the Director General Prosecution. The prosecution plays a critical role in technical and substantive issues and in linking the Police and investigations to the judiciary and court proceedings.
Currently, the department has 370 prosecutors. The existing strength of the prosecution will increase with the deployment of prosecutors in the merged districts. A dedicated training academy will help overcome the challenges that the department previously faced in terms of building the capacity of prosecutors and its allied staff. The newly appointed prosecutors who earlier began their duties without formal training will acquire training with the construction of the academy which will have a positive impact on their performance.
Mr. Ikram Ullah Khan, Secretary Home and Tribal Affairs Department was the Chief Guest at the ceremony, with Mr. Ignacio Artaza Resident Representative a.i. UNDP, the Director General Prosecution, and the INL-Pakistan team were also present at he occasion.
