Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Mian Saqib Nisar Monday said he would request caretaker Prime Minister Justice (r) Nasirul Mulk to monitor the issue of water shortage in the country himself.
ISLAMABAD, (UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 25th Jun, 2018 ) :Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Mian Saqib Nisar Monday said he would request caretaker Prime Minister Justice (r) Nasirul Mulk to monitor the issue of water shortage in the country himself.
The CJP gave the remarks while heading a three-member SC bench which heard a suo moto notice case regarding water shortage across the country.
During the course of proceedings, the chief justice asked the attorney general about the sources of supply of water to the Federal capital.
He said the federal and provincial governments should sit together to find out a permanent solution of the matter as otherwise water would not be available even for drinking soon.
Former member of the National Assembly Zamarud Khan, who was summoned by the court along with government officials including the chief executive officer (CEO) of Rawalpindi Cantonment board (RCB), suggested that water tanker owners should not be allowed to receive any amount in excess of Rs 1,500 per tanker.
The RCB CEO apprised the court that 60 hydrants, which had been operating in the past, were shut down now, which might be a reason behind the issue.
Pakistan Peoples Party leader Aitzaz Ahsan pleaded the court that there was a judgment in Raam Chan vs Pakistan case in 1961, which needed to be reviewed.
To this, the chief justice observed that the judgement should be reviewed and adjourned the hearing till June 27.
The apex court also directed Aitzaz to come up with recommendations to resolve the water shortage problem in the country on next date of hearing.
