The Inspector General Sindh Police Dr Kaleem Imam Saturday said the performance of Sindh police showed a remarkable improvement in the outgoing year.
Addressing a press conference in Hyderabad Range's office here, the IG said the police succeeded in maintaining law and order, providing security to mega events like crickets matches, caught terrorists and criminals.
"The basic reason for these achievement was that the police has increased their presence, we got resources from the government, learnt lessons from past mistakes and enhanced our capability to meet the challenges," he observed.
He acknowledged that some incidents of terrorism happened in the last months of 2018 but police have got good leads and soon the culprits involved would be arrested.
IG noted that the challenges like poverty, unemployment, inflation, radicalization, ideological differences and support of hostile agencies were breeding crimes and terrorism.
Responding to a question about the target killing of Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan's former MNA Ali Raza Abidi, Imam briefly disclosed that the police investigation had made headway. "But we can't share with the media anything at this stage of the investigation," he said.
He told that the police had evidence that some groups of Pakistani men had settled abroad and that they were carrying crimes in the country.
According to him, some of those groups had been identified and the others had been arrested.
We will soon share details with the media with regard to identification and arrest of such groups," he said.
He claimed that Chief Minister Sindh Syed Murad Ali Shah had appreciated the police performance.
To a question about installation of trackers in the police vehicles, he said the Sindh police would install those devices in more vehicles in 2019 to bolster command and control. When asked why the police failed to curb the crime of kidnapping, he apprised that the incidents of kidnapping reduced from 46 cases in 2017 to 35 in 2018. He added that all the kidnapped persons had been recovered.
Responding to a question he told that the police had started a two-pronged strategy against the illicit trade and consumption of ice drug.He said on one hand the police were arresting the smugglers involved in the drug peddling and on other hand the police were sensitizing the communities, teachers and students against the menace.
The DIG Hyderabad Naeem Ahmed Shaikh and other police officers were present on the occasion.
