Women Scientists' Achievements To Be Projected Prominently: Speakers

ISLAMABAD, (UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 10th Mar, 2018 ) :Women are performing extraordinary in science and technology sector despite several challenges, but they still need motivation, guidance, mentor-ship and mechanism to connect with opportunities for grabbing more space according to their talent in this field.

"It is not proved medically or written anywhere that women has less mind or abilities, only biased and stereotype thinking that they are not appropriate for hard task jobs created hurdles in their way of progress which needed to be countered", speakers said at a seminar "Women in Science".

Addressing as chief guest at the seminar, organized by Pakistan Science Foundation here, Secretary Ministry of Science and Technology, Yasmeen Mughal, shared that women faced multiple problems even at higher level but they had courage to face resilience.

She stated that women in science were asset, adding that conducive environment paved their way towards success and achieving their goals. She further said conducting such moots provided space, visibility and acknowledgement of their skills.

Dr. Amina Khan, Executive Director, Institute of Orange Grove Form apprised the participants that women were 48.5 percent population of the country among which only 22 percent contributed in Grass National Progress.

"This small figure still contributes 40 percent of the production as they are more hardworking, dedicated and sincere with their world.

Another amazing fact is that only 32 percent of 22 percent productive women folk have intermediate or higher education." "Women have a special characteristic of multitasking", she said adding, many legislations were done on the rights of women to provide them conducive environment for nurturing their abilities and skills, but there was a dire need of their monitoring, surveillance and implementation.

Professor, Department of Bio-Chemistry, Quaid-e-Azam University Islamabad, Dr. Bushra Mirza, informed the participants that women contributed in research was still limited in few areas as 48.3 % in medical and health disciplines, 45.5 % in Humanitrian and Arts, 42.7 % in Natural Sciences, 22% in Engineering, and only 11% in agriculture subjects.

The professor, who is also awarded with IESCO Women Science Chair, opined that lack of support from academic institutions, networking, confidence and biased attitudes were the major hurdles in the way of women to shine in their fields.

She urged for steps to counter these challenges with the collaboration of pubic and private sector to work collectively helping women folk to excel in their fields. Anne Marchal, Charge Affaris, European Union Delegation of Pakistan and newly appointed Chairman Pakistan Science Foundation (PSF) Major (Retd) Qaiser Majeed Malik also spoke on the occasion.
