PNCA screens film on political activists

ISLAMABAD, Dec 2 (UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 2nd Dec, 2018 ) :'The Year My Parents Went on Vacation', a film on political activists, was screened Sunday here at the Pakistan National Council of Arts (PNCA) as part of the 16-day International Film Festival on Human Rights.

Highlighting human rights through cinematography, the United Nations Information Center in Islamabad (UNIC) arranged screening of the film in collaboration with the European Union.

Directed by Cao Hamburger, screenplay of 'The Year My Parents Went on Vacation - a Brazilian drama film - took four years to be completed. The film is the kind of beautifully orchestrated glimpse into the wildly complex politics of Brazil born out of the country's traditional cinema, or new cinema of the 1950s and 60s.

The story revolves around a 12-year-old boy, who is suddenly deprived of the company of his young parents, Bia and Daniel Stein, who are political activists on the run from the harsh military government, which was strongly repressing leftists all over the country.

Against this backdrop of fear and political persecution, the country is at the same time bursting with enthusiasm for the coming World Cup, to be held in Mexico, the first one to be transmitted live via satellite.

Cinema Novo is inspired by Italian neo-realism and the French New Wave, using classic European methods on a low budget to depict the raw and graphic scenes of poverty, racism, and exploitation.

The Year My Parents Went on Vacation, while coming years after the historical end of Cinema Novo, clearly fits within its ideology. It is a pseudo black comedy and coming of age saga about the boy.

The event was arranged in celebration of 70 years of Universal Declaration of Human Rights while 27 thematic documentaries will be screened in Gujrat, Islamabad, Karachi, Lahore, Multan, Mardan, Peshawar, Quetta, Rawalpindi and Swat till December 10.
