Film on portrayal of peaceful Islam screened

The Poetess - a film depicting the story of a Saudi woman who grabs the opportunity to speak against religious extremism and stands up for a peaceful Islam, was screened here late Monday at Pakistan National Council of the Arts (PNCA).

ISLAMABAD, (UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 26th Nov, 2018 ) :The Poetess - a film depicting the story of a Saudi woman who grabs the opportunity to speak against religious extremism and stands up for a peaceful islam, was screened here late Monday at Pakistan National Council of the Arts (PNCA).

The film was part of International Film Festival "Highlighting human rights through cinematography" arranged by United Nations Information Center in Islamabad (UNIC) in celebration of 70 years of Universal Declaration of Human Rights in collaboration with European Union.

The film revolved around Hissa Hilal, who is the voice from behind the veil.

Her weapon is her word. Hissa is a self-taught writer and she says what she thinks.

She decides to take part in the Million's poet show, an Abu-Dhabi based tv show.

It is the Arab world's biggest poetry competition, and it is dominated by men.

Hissa works herself up, becoming the first woman in the finals.

In her poems, she criticizes the patriarchal society. Like the majority of Saudi women, Hissa is covered from head to toe. She is not allowed to drive a car and she doesn't own a passport.

Coming out of nowhere, the housewife Hissa is suddenly breaking news in the biggest Western and Arab media. The award winning film is directed by Stefanie Brockhaus and produced by Andreas Wolff .

Meanwhile, Freedom for the Wolf � a German film was screened at Abdul Wali Khan University, Mardan and " War Against Women"� at National College of Arts (NCA) Lahore at same day as part of the festival documentary screenings.

Freedom for the Wolf focused on the theme `Democracy is in crisis' as a new generation of elected leaders are dismantling freedom and democracy.

Filmed over three years in five countries, Freedom for the Wolf is an epic investigation into this new regime. From the young students of Hong Kong, to a rapper in post-Arab Spring Tunisia and the viral comedians of Bollywood, the film discover how people from every corner of the globe are fighting the same struggle.

They are fighting against elected leaders who trample on human rights, minorities, and their political opponents.

Director of the film Rupert Russell and his producers, Camilla Hall and Patrick Hamm, filmed in five countries � Tunisia, India, Japan, Hong Kong, United States � over three continents. In their ssearch for the modern meaning of freedom, they interviewed pro-China politicians, leaders of the Muslim Brotherhood, Hindu nationalist vigilantes, Tunisian rappers, Bollywood comedians, and Trump-voting autoworkers.

War Against Women is a documentary examining the global phenomenon of rape as a "weapon of war" in various conflict zones, including Bosnia and the Democratic Republic of Congo. It is directed by Hernan Zin and written by Andrew Ford.
