Muhammad Aurangzeb was born on December 24, 1919, in Haripur, Hazara Division, then fall under British India, now Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Pakistan. Qateel Shifai belonged to the Hindko background. He was a prominent Urdu poet and lyricist. More than 20 books of verse and 2,500 books of songs have been released in Pakistan and India. In addition to Hindi, Gujarati, English, Russian, and Chinese, he has translated his poetry into other languages.

Qateel Shifai Personal life:

His personal life was full of struggle in the beginning. As a businessman, he was unsuccessful, so he left his small town of Haripur for Rawalpindi. Later, he became a lyricist for Pakistani films and worked for a transport company. He has 05 children, of which two are daughters and 03 sons. The name of his children is as follows. Musarat Butt, Samina Khurshid, Pervaiz Qateel, Naveed Qateel, Tanveer Qateel.

Qateel Shifai Education:

In 1935, his father passed away, and he wasn't able to pursue his higher education. As a lyricist, he began his career in Lahore's film industry in 1947 after a failed attempt to make a living through small business ventures. Besides, he was the son of a businessman, and his family had not a single one in the Shayari field. 

His poetry was initially corrected and advised by Hakeem Yahya Shifa Khanpuri. As a result, 'Shifai' was Qateel's poetic surname due to his teacher's influence over him. Ahmad Nadeem Qasmi was his friend and neighbor who later became his disciple. He mainly wrote lyrical Shayari, which he began with ghazals.

It is true that even in his nazms, he was musical and lyrical. The romantic geet he wrote earned him high acclaim. Qatiil published 14 other poems.

Qateel Shifai Career:

A literary journal published in 1936, Adab-e-Latif, called him to Lahore as an assistant editor in 1946. He published his first ghazal in Qamar Ajnalvi's Lahore weekly, the Star. Then a Lahore-based film producer, Dewan Sardari Lal, asked Qateel to write the songs for a film in January 1947.

Teri Yaad (1948) was the first film in Pakistan for which he wrote the lyrics. After assisting some famous poets and lyricists of the era (1948 to 1955), he became a writer and lyricist. Besides, he eventually became one of Pakistan's most successful film lyricists, winning many awards for writing film lyrics.

Now a famed Urdu poet, Dr. Naeem Chishti assisted Qateel Shifai in completing his autobiography "Ghungroo Toot Gaye '' in 1988. After many years of work, this project was finally complete. And after Qateel's death in 2006, the book was finally published by his son Naveed Shifai.

In addition to revealing many complex facts about the film industry and literary circles, the book also revealed some exciting glimpses into the personal lives of legendary figures like Sahir Ludhianvi, Iqbal Bano, and Noor Jehan. Also, he explained how he became successful.

Qateel Shifai Pen Name:

Aurangzeb Khan changed his original name to his pen name of Qateel Shifai in the year 1938. His pen name was an inspiration from his teacher Hakeem Yahya Shifa Khanpuri, who taught, corrected, and advised him earlier in his poetic career.

Qateel Shifai Awards:

His mother tongue Hindko was the subject of a 1970 film produced by Qateel Shifai. A Hindko film was named "Qissa Khwani" for the first time. 1980 was the year of the film's release.

The Pride of Performance award for 1994 went to Qateel Shifai. The dialogue and lyrics of Qateel Shifai's poetry have been lauded. As a result of his outstanding work, the poet has received the Adamjee Award, Naqoosh Award, Abbasin Arts Council Award, and Amir Khusro Award in India.

For his lifelong contributions to the Pakistan film industry, he received the Millennium Nigar Award in 1999. July 11, 2001, was his last day in Lahore. Upon his death, Qateel Shifai Street was named in his honor in Lahore. Mohallah Qateel Shifai has also been given a part of Haripur city's name.
