Metaphysical Poetry

Metaphysical poetry is marked by bold and hidden conceits, imagery, complexity, the juxtaposition of thoughts, frequent use of paradox ideas, and often by harshness. Urdu Metaphysical poetry highlights the expression for a predefined image symbolizing a particular theme. This type of poetry goes deep down beyond the surface meaning of a poetic piece.

For example, the idea of the regeneration of Allama Iqbal emerged from the inspiration of his beautiful surroundings, Kashmir. But of course, the regeneration implied is that of Islam, which according to him, is the religion of humanity and the religion of nature. So it may look like that he is talking about the physical world and the beauty of nature, but he is exploring and juxtaposing the world of senses and spirituality.

In ancient times, Metaphysical poetry was much appreciated in the Jacobean age, the era of Shakespeare. It is said that John Donne is the leader and founder of metaphysical poetry. Many other critics and poets praised him for his use of metaphysics. His imagination was beyond the surface meaning and more like spiritual and understanding the senses of the world.
