Abu Al-Asar Hafeez Jalandhari was the most famous poet in the history of Pakistani Urdu Literature. It is because he wrote the National Anthem of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan. Chaudhary Abu Al Asar Hafeez Jalandhari was born on 14 January 1900 in Jalandhar, Punjab, British India, to the Arain family. We have seen in our lives that people with meager formal schooling have rarely reached the heights of fame, fortune, and honor in modern history. Their talent and unwavering commitment helped them achieve this rare feat. He is known by the name of Hafeez Jalandhari.

Hafeez Jalandhari Personal life:

The name of his father was Shams-ud-Din. He was a Hafiz-e-Qur'an. Zeenat Begum married Hafeez Jalanandhari in 1917 when he was 17 years old. A total of seven girls were born to them. His second wife was Anela, an Englishwoman of Lithuanian descent. Despite having a daughter, they divorced. In 1954 Hafeez Jalanandhari lost his first wife, Zeenat Begum. In 1955 he married another woman named Khurshid Begum, with whom he had a daughter.

Education:

His formal education lacks proper schooling. Hafeez Jalandhari was admitted to a mosque school, and after some time, he joined a local school. His first verse was composed when he was just seven years old, and his first Ghazal was composed when he was eleven. As a school teacher, his father Shams-ud-Din tried to persuade him to concentrate on his studies rather than poetry.

He went on to secure proper schooling till the seventh grade. Nonetheless, Hafeez dropped out of school at the age of twelve and all formal education. Hafeez had made a significant contribution towards Urdu poetry when it comes to both quality and quantity.

Poetry came naturally to him. Maulana Qadir Gharami accepted him as a disciple. In 1947, following Pakistan's independence, Jalandhari migrated to Lahore, a new state of Pakistan.

Career:

He served as editor of several monthly magazines between 1922 and 1929, such as Nonehal, Hazar Dastaan, Teehzeeb-e-Niswan, and Makhzin. His first collection of poems fell into obscurity until the 1940s, but it was published in 1935. Later he joined the Song Publicity Department that employed him after World War II. During this time, he also wrote several songs during this time.

His writings held a great deal of influence in encouraging people to join the Pakistan Movement. Later, in 1946, he witnessed a performance of mushaira by the Anjuman-i Taraqqi-i Urdu while he was visiting the Sylhet region of Bengal.

Hafeez mentioned in an interview that in his early days, he did everything to earn his living while working different odd jobs such as selling perfumes, a job in railways, tailoring, contractor, even became a porter at the railway station. Further, he went on selling flour and even his own ghazals. Hafeez was sentenced to three months in prison for writing a poem against British rule in 1919. He sold sewing machines after being released from prison in Okara, but his heart was in poetry, and he couldn't do it.

Besides his poetry and poetic works, he also took part in the forces fighting for the independence of Kashmir. With this being said, he was once wounded in 1948 while fighting as a freedom fighter for claiming the independence of Azad Jammu Kashmir.

A Pakistani committee was established on 23 February 1949 to prepare the national anthem of Pakistan. Among seven hundred twenty-three people who submitted ideas for the national anthem, the lyrics written by Hafeez Jalandhari were selected, and that became the national anthem of Pakistan.

Ahmed Ghulamali Chagla, also known as Ahmed G Chagla, this national anthem of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan, was composed in close coordination by him. In addition to being Director General of Morality in the Pakistan Armed Forces, Jalandhari also served as an advisor to Field Marshal Mohammad Ayub Khan and was part of the Writers Guild of Pakistan.

Abhi Toh Mein Jawan Hoon is one of his most famous songs, which Malika Pukhraj sang in the 1950s with music composed by Master Inayat Hussain. It is still widely popular even today. A devout Muslim, he was also a poet who wrote poems praising the Hindu deity Krishna.

In the manner of Ferdowsi, Jalandhari's Shahnam-e-Islam is a lyrical record of Islam's glorious history. In this sense, it established Jalandhari as a poet and as a scholar of Islam. His lilting rhythms and enchanting melodies made his songs and lyrics unique among Urdu poets.

Poems he wrote generally tended to deal with themes of romantic love, religion, or patriotism. Hindi and Urdu blended well in his spoken language, reflecting the South Asian culture.

Chaudhary Abu Al Asar Hafeez Jalandhari was commonly known by his pen name Abu Al-Asar. But the Pakistani newspapers and the commoners knew him as Hafeez Jalandhari.

Awards:

The pride of performance award was given by the Government of Pakistan in 1958, honoring his performance. Chaudhary Abu Al Asar Hafeez Jalandhari has been honored by Pakistan's President with the Hilal-i-Imtiaz Award for his literary and patriotic contributions to his country. He further wrote Watan Hamara Azad Kashmir. It was a poem written by Hafeez Jalandhari. This poem later became the National Anthem of Azad Jammu And Kashmir.

It makes him the only person ever lived in the history of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan who has written two national anthems, one for the homeland and the other for the independent state annexed with the Islamic Republic of Pakistan.

Furthermore, he wrote several patriotic songs during 1965's Indo-Pak War. His image was featured on a commemorative stamp issued by the Pakistan Post Office in 2001 as part of its 'Poets of Pakistan' series.

Death:

Chaudhary Abu Al Asar Hafeez Jalandhari died in Lahore, Pakistan, on December 21, 1982. He was 82 years old. At first, Model Town, Lahore, was the initial burial site. But his remains were later moved to the Minar-e-Pakistan near the Pakistan Resolution in Lahore for a permanent burial ground for him.
