رہ جستجو میں بھٹک گئے تو کسی سے کوئی گلا نہیں
کہ ہم اس کے ہو کے نہ جی سکے وہ ہمارا بن کے ملا نہیں
مرے فکر و فن پہ محیط ہے جو تصور ایک خدا نما
ہے تلاش اس کی نہیں پتہ وہ خدا بھی ہے کہ خدا نہیں
جو ملی نہیں مجھے آگہی ہے مری نگاہ سے اجنبی
ہو رگ گلو سے قریب بھی تو یہی کہیں گے ملا نہیں
جو بصیر ہو وہ نظر بھی دے مجھے آگہی کا ہنر بھی دے
مگر اب تو میری خبر بھی دے کہ مجھے خود اپنا پتہ نہیں
ہیں شہابؔ میرے حواس گم کہ ہر ایک شب ہے شب دہم
جو بجھا تو بجھ کے ہی رہ گیا ہے چراغ پھر سے جلا نہیں

ki hum us ke ho ke na ji sake wo hamara ban ke mila nahin
mere fikr-o-fan pe muhit hai jo tasawwur ek KHuda-numa
hai talash us ki nahin pata wo KHuda bhi hai ki KHuda nahin
jo mili nahin mujhe aagahi hai meri nigah se ajnabi
ho rag-e-gulu se qarib bhi to yahi kahenge mila nahin
jo basir ho wo nazar bhi de mujhe aagahi ka hunar bhi de
magar ab tu meri KHabar bhi de ki mujhe KHud apna pata nahin
hain 'shahab' mere hawas gum ki har ek shab hai shab-e-dahum
jo bujha to bujh ke hi rah gaya hai charagh phir se jala nahin
