شایان زندگی نہ تھے ہم معتبر نہ تھے

ہاں کم نظر تھے اتنے مگر کم نظر نہ تھے

اب کے برس جو پھول کھلا کاغذی ہی تھا

اب کے تو دور دور کہیں برگ تر نہ تھے

ہر پھول ایک زخم تھا ہر شاخ ایک لاش

گویا کہ راہ میں تھیں صلیبیں شجر نہ تھے

بادل اٹھے تو ریت کے ذرے برس پڑے

ہم کو بھگو گئے ہیں وہ دامن جو تر نہ تھے

کہتے تھے ایک جوئے رواں ہے چمن چمن

دیکھا تو بستیوں کے کنارے بھی تر نہ تھے

ٹکرا کے سر کو اپنا لہو آپ چاٹتے

اچھا ہوا کہ دشت میں دیوار و در نہ تھے

دریا کا سینہ چیر کے ابھرے جو سطح پر

دامن میں سنگریزے تھے اخترؔ گہر نہ تھے
